Benjamin Millepied (born June 10, 1977 in Bordeaux ) is a French ballet dancer and choreographer . From October 2014 to February 2016 he was director of the Paris Opera ballet company .

Dance training

Millepied's ballet training began at the age of eight from his mother, a former ballet dancer. Between the ages of 13 and 16 he was trained by Michel Rahn at the Conservatoire National de Lyon. He then continued his education at the School of American Ballet in New York until 1994.

Career

Millepied has been a member of the New York City Ballet ensemble since 1995, as a solo dancer since 1998 and as principal soloist since 2002. He worked as a choreographer and actor in the film Black Swan in 2009/2010 . He is the founder of the LA Dance Project, which he directed from 2011 to 2014.

In January 2013, Millepied was appointed director of the Paris Opera Ballet . He took up the position in mid-October 2014. At the beginning of February 2016, he announced his resignation. In the same year, Aurélie Dupont took over as chief chorographer at the Opéra de Paris. Millepied resumed work on the LA Dance Project that same year.

Private

Millepied has been married to actress Natalie Portman since August 4, 2012 . They have a son, who was born on June 14, 2011, and a daughter, who was born in February 2017. The two had met while filming the thriller Black Swan . He converted to Judaism for Portman.
