action

Greg is in his senior year of high school, where he is as inconspicuous as possible. His only friend is Earl, a black man who grew up in poor conditions and whom he has known since kindergarten. However, he only describes him as a “work colleague” because he has already made 42 films with him. Their title, e.g. B. A Sockwork Orange , are modified from well-known films in a funny way.

Greg learns from his mother that his classmate Rachel has leukemia . She asks him to visit the girl he has hardly paid any attention to. Rachel, however, does not want pity visits, but at his urging agrees to “hang out” with him for a day so that his mother is satisfied. Since Rachel has a lot of pillows in her room, he tells her that he sometimes has a special relationship with pillows, which she finds interesting. Not knowing much about Rachel's illness, Greg asks his teacher about it. Greg befriends Rachel. He gives her tips on how to fake a seizure or play dead if she doesn't want to talk to others. Most of all Rachel worries that her mother will not be able to cope with "when it comes to an end". She finds it very stupid that Greg doesn't want to go to college, which would be a "nightmare" for him. When Greg is having lunch with her in the cafeteria, he makes enemies of some of his classmates with mocking remarks, which annoys him very much because he has destroyed his "cultivated invisibility". When Greg and Earl try the teacher's soup in the popular history teacher's office, where they usually spend their lunch break, they are "on drugs" afterwards. In this state they visit Rachel, who is now receiving chemotherapy . That's how she meets Earl. While eating ice cream on a staircase, Earl tells Rachel about the films he is making with Greg, which he had previously withheld from her. Then they watch some of the films together that Greg and Earl find "shit" themselves, but amuse Rachel.

Rachel has been in treatment for weeks now and has gone bald, which she covers with a cap. She finds herself ugly and is very unhappy about it. To cheer her up, Greg gives her the self-made films and tells her about the new film, a modification of Apocalypse Now , in which the heroes come across a box of tulips. While shooting the video, the classmate Madison joins them, who thinks they should make a film for Rachel. Greg replies "true", which he does not take as a promise. Greg's mother wants him to apply for college and gives him a thick manual on how to do it. Rachel explains to him the advantages over high school and manages to get him to apply to Pittsburg State over the Internet in her presence . Greg then gives her the book. While Rachel is now wearing wigs and continues to watch the films, Greg receives the acceptance from the university. Rachel eventually has to go to the clinic while Earl and Greg discuss a movie for her. Earl doesn't want to do it and Greg has no idea, but they try anyway. They record unimaginative greetings from classmates (“you can do it”) and an interview with Rachel's mother. In it, she describes the scissors as Rachel's favorite toy since she used them to destroy her father's books when he left the family. Rachel has a different mood when she visits, but she keeps getting quieter. Finally, she announced that she would stop the treatment, it would only make her sicker. Greg does not want to accept this ("I will not watch you die"), whereupon Rachel reproaches him for not doing anything of his own accord. Greg is frustrated, he accuses Earl of "treason" for telling Rachel about the film and wants to fight him. Earl thinks that is irrelevant, it is important that someone now cares about Greg.

With Greg no longer getting homework, his academic performance has deteriorated and the college is withdrawing his admission. His mother tells him that Rachel is back in the hospital, but no longer for treatment. Greg refuses to visit her. He would regret it, but it was her decision to give up and he regretted everything else he had done. Madison persuades Greg to go to the school ball with her. His mother gets him a tuxedo, in which he doesn't go to school but to the clinic. He's got the movie they made for Rachel, which they watch together. First, various close-ups of the faces of the three and Rachel's mother are shown. Moving shapes and psychedelic colors can then be seen. Rachel suddenly feels very bad and needs the help of the staff. She later falls into a coma and dies a short time later.

At the memorial service, Rachel's mother returns the college manual to Greg. In this is a card, on which Rachel wrote a farewell letter. Greg goes back to her room and reads the text. She wrote a letter to college saying he was a "good friend" but an idiot if he wasn't going to college and that he should take some of her pillows with him. In her letter to the college she describes Greg as someone “who gave me half a year of his life at a time when I was very hard to bear”. In the manual and other books, Greg discovers works of art that Rachel has cut with scissors. In the end, he sends another application to the college to which he attaches the film, with the warning that the last person to see him died afterwards.

criticism

The film received mostly positive reviews. At Metacritic , the film received a Metascore of 74/100 based on 40 reviews, while at Rotten Tomatoes 81 percent of the 210 reviews were positive.

The German film and media rating describes me and Earl and the girl as “touching, entertaining, weird and loving at the same time. A great film about friendship that can change a life. And an enchanting story that you won't soon forget, ”and gave him the predicate particularly valuable . The reasoning states: “The film circumnavigates cliffs of embarrassment and creates a humorous, bizarre narrative style, which is based on both the literary model (through wonderful chapter headings such as 'Day 1 of doomed friendship' and a sometimes philosophical voiceover) as well as the cinematic possibilities more than justice.
