Showcase with pillows

A pillow , in Austria upholstery (plural: pad), is a dense bag filled with down , foam or another soft material . The tissue for receiving the filling is also called a pouring in or ticking .

Fillings with seeds or grains or with sludge (peat or clay) are also common, but not as a soft base, but as a heat store. There is no uniform or standardized typing for pillows. Cushions are differentiated according to use and filling. In Asian countries it is common to fill pillows with sheep's wool.

Uses

The pillow or rest pillow is used as a support for the head in a lying posture in bed or for the neck or back on the sofa . A similar function is fulfilled by a column filled with foam bolster and made of water-impermeable material with open cell foam bath cushion .

The seat cushion is a pillarless piece of furniture that is common in many cultures. In Europe, where it was the most common seat in the Middle Ages, it is rarely used today. It is used as a zafu for sitting meditations . A cushion-like support for the seat of a chair is now also referred to as a seat cushion or chair cushion . In this context, it should not be confused with the upholstered seat. Orthopedic seat cushions are also becoming increasingly important, as they can , for example, relieve the tailbone or are helpful with pressure ulcers with special pressure management .

The armpit pillow is a triangular shaped pillow on which you can support yourself with your armpit when sitting on the floor and eating at a low table, for example. This shape of the pillow is used almost exclusively in Thailand and is made from cotton painted in bright colors with indigo .

The decorative cushion serves as a decorative accessory and back support on the sofa.

The parade pillow is a larger pillow with embroidery or other decorations lying on the actual pillow for decoration.

Grain pillows , on the other hand, are used to slowly release the heat stored in the water content and starch, oil and husk or other woody parts. Then the pillow acts like a hot water bottle . Fillings with cherry pit, grape seed , wheat grain , spelled grain and rapeseed are common.

Side sleeper pillows are elongated, usually 1.50 meters long and about 25-40 centimeters in diameter. Side sleeper pillows are used, as the name suggests, for side sleepers. The side sleeper pillow lies between the upper and lower leg. This sleeping position prevents the cervical spine from kinking and relieves the back.

hazards

House dust mites live in almost all used pillows, and their feces can cause allergies . Pillows are also breeding grounds for various molds that can cause allergies, infections and other diseases.

Incorrectly placed pillows can be problematic from an orthopedic point of view.
