The American Ballet Theater (ABT) is a ballet company based in New York .

description

When it was founded in 1939, the aim was to build a repertoire that consisted of the best ballets of the past and to encourage the creation of new works by talented choreographers . Under the direction of Lucia Chase and Oliver Smith , this goal was achieved in the 1940s to 1980s. Alongside the New York City Ballet and the San Francisco Ballet , the ABT is now one of the most important ballet companies in the USA . The ABT performs in New York at the Metropolitan Opera in the Lincoln Center.

The repertoire includes all full-length ballets from the 19th century, such as Swan Lake , Sleeping Beauty and Giselle , innovative pieces from the beginning of the 20th century, such as Apollo and Les Sylphides, but also contemporary pieces such as Airs , Push Comes to Shove and Duets .

From 1980 to 1989 Mikhail Baryshnikov took over the position of artistic director. From 1990 to 1992 the ABT was under the direction of Jane Herrmann and Oliver Smith. Since October 1992 the task has been performed by the former dancer Kevin McKenzie .

The most important choreographers of their time have worked at the ABT since it was founded, including: George Balanchine , Michel Fokine , Léonide Massine , Bronislava Nijinska , Jerome Robbins , John Taras , Antony Tudor and Twyla Tharp . Many of them developed choreographies that were first performed with the ABT.

The Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis (JKO) School has been the official school of the American Ballet Theater since 2004.
