life and work

He started ballet training at the age of four and was accepted as a talent for further training by the Moscow Bolshoi Theater at the age of ten (teacher among others Pyotr Pestov). Despite his graduation with top marks, he was initially not accepted into the ensemble . Instead, he became the youngest principal dancer with the Moscow Classical Ballet in 1986. After he had won several awards, he was hired at the Bolshoi Theater.

In 1992 he did not return home from a US tour. He received an attractive engagement with the Vienna State Opera Ballet and was granted Austrian citizenship. Critics compared him to Nureyev ; the Viennese daily Kurier named him on November 16, 1993 in its review of the premiere of “Manon” under the title “A Dancer of the Century”, a term that has been used often since then, including in New York Times .

In 2002 he was appointed ballet director of the Berlin State Opera and from 2004 was artistic director and ballet director at the Berlin State Ballet . Despite some health problems, he continued to dance in his ensemble.

“As a rule I can endure pain very well, as a dancer you always have it anyway. The lifting figures torment the back and neck. The feet are often sore, the arms cramped, the body is marked by bruises, bruises and calluses. "
