Gillian Murphy

Gillian Murphy (* 1979 ) is an American ballet dancer . She holds Principal Dancer status with the American Ballet Theater .

Murphy grew up in Florence, South Carolina, where she also began taking ballet lessons. She completed her training at the North Carolina School of Arts with the Canadian ballerina Melissa Hayden . In August 1996 the American Ballet Theater signed her as a dancer in the Corps de ballet , in 1999 she became a soloist, and in 2002 she was appointed Principal Dancer .

Murphy has danced almost all of the solo roles in the wide-ranging repertoire of the American Ballet Theater, including in a TV / DVD production of Swan Lake (role: Odette / Odile, 2005). Since 2012 she has also been a Principal Guest Artist with the Royal New Zealand Ballet .
