Marcelo Ferreira de Oliveira Gomes (born October 28, 1963 in Recife , Pernambuco ) is a Brazilian filmmaker . His film Joaquim was invited to the 2017 Berlinale competition. Before that, he had already participated in festivals in Cannes , Venice and Toronto .

Life

Gomes founded a film club (Cineclube Jurando Vingar) in his hometown of Recife at a young age between 1989 and 1990. He graduated from the University of Bristol with a degree in film in 1991 , where he made several award-winning short films. His short film Maracatu, Maracatus received an award at the Festival de Brasília in 1995. Returning to Recife, he founded the production company Parabólica Brasil with Adelina Pontual and Cláudio Assis. In 1999 he received the award for best short film at the Gramado Film Festival for Clandestina Felicidade (1998) . Since 2002 he has also appeared as a screenwriter , e.g. B. for Madame Satã by Karim Ainouz .

His feature film debut Cinema, Aspirinas e Urubu was invited to Cannes in 2005. In 2009 his film Viajo Porque Preciso, Volto Porque Te Amo celebrated its premiere in Venice, which he realized together with Karim Ainouz. The follow-up film Era Uma Vez Eu, Verônica ran in 2012 a. a. at the Toronto International Film Festival and was awarded at the Brasília Festival.

Gomes was already a guest at the 2014 Berlinale with his film O Homem das Multidões in the “Panorama” section. The film is a collaboration with Cao Guimarães . In 2017 he and Joaquim were invited to the competition . In 2019 his documentary Estou Me Guardando Para Quando O Carnaval Chegar about jeans production in Toritama was shown in Panorama.
