history

1938 to 1950

The first, more significant production of the SFB was Coppélia (1938) choreographed by Willam Christensen. In 1940, Swan Lake was first introduced to the American population. They began the tradition of performing the Nutcracker with a premiere at Christmas 1944. This piece, also choreographed by Christensen, is known as the first complete performance of Tchaikovsky's most popular piece in the United States.

In 1942 the opera ballet was divided; an independent ballet was created parallel to the opera company. The ballet half was bought by William and Harold Christensen. You also took over the artistic direction and the direction of the San Francisco Ballet School.

1951 to 1985

1951 was the next noteworthy change in the direction of the San Francisco Ballet. Lew Christensen, the first solo dancer, became co-director of William Christensen. The following year Lew took over the management completely and the SFB began to broaden its horizons, to travel and to consolidate its name as one of the great American ballet companies. The first national and international tours ensured a high level of awareness. Finally, at Christmas 1964, Lew's choreographed version of the nutcracker for the SFB was broadcast on ABC-TV.

In 1972 Lew brought his company closer to their original home, the War Memorial Opera House, by naming it as the home theater.

1985 to the present

Since 1985 Helgi Tomasson has been the artistic director and director of the San Francisco Ballet School. He has created the vast majority of his more than 40 ballets to date for the company of the SFB. In 2014 he extended his contract for another five years.
