Bronislava Nijinska (French: transcription, Polish spelling Bronisława Niżyńska, Russian Бронислава Фоминична Нижинская , Bronislawa Fominitschna Nischinskaja ; born January 8, 1892 in Minsk ; † February 21, 1972 in Los Angeles , a Russian choreographer and dance teacher , later a Russian choreographer , and later a Polish ballet dancer , † February 21, 1972 in Los Angeles ) worked mainly in France and the United States . She is considered a pioneer of neoclassicism . Among other things, she was one of the stars at the Ballets Russes and choreographed numerous pieces there.

Life

Her father Tomasz Niżyński and her mother Eleonora Bereda were both dancers. The two years older brother Vaslav Nijinsky was also a dancer and choreographer.

From 1900 Nijinska attended the Imperial Ballet School in Saint Petersburg with her brother . Eight years later, Bronislava was engaged as a dancer at the Mariinsky Theater in Saint Petersburg and a year later at the Ballets Russes in Paris . There she danced the pieces Carnaval and Pétrouchka .

In 1914 Nijinska created her first choreography for the piece La Tabatière . Soon after, she opened a dance school in Kiev .

When Bronislawa left her Russian homeland in 1921, she worked as the first soloist with the Ballets Russes and developed into one of the most important choreographers in the troupe.

This was followed by a lot of work for various troops and theaters: in 1932 Nijinska founded her own troupe. In 1935 she choreographed for the Hollywood film A Midsummer Night's Dream by Max Reinhardt . From 1937 she directed the Polish Ballet in Paris and worked for the Markova Dolin Company . In 1938 Bronislawa opened a dance school in Los Angeles . In the USA she worked for the American Ballet Theater . In 1945 Nijinska became ballet master of the Grand Ballet du Marquis de Cuevas . In 1964 she revised her pieces Les Noces and Les Biches for the Royal Ballet in London . From 1967 Bronislawa directed the Buffalo Ballet Theater .
