occupation

Kill Your Darlings - Junge Wilde (Original title: Kill Your Darlings ) is an American film by director John Krokidas with Daniel Radcliffe and Dane DeHaan in the lead roles. The film is set in 1944 and is about the university days of the first members of the Beat Generation , their relationships and a murder case. The plot is based on real events, which can also be seen as the final trigger for the already obsessive urge to write by Allen Ginsberg , Jack Kerouac and William S. Burroughs .

action

In contrast to his hometown in New Jersey, the young Allen Ginsberg feels that Columbia University, where intellect, art and freedom rule, is a cultural Mecca. When he was accepted there to study literature, his father encouraged him to leave his mentally ill mother behind and pursue his dreams in New York.

Arriving at Columbia, everyone finds a mixture of old traditions and modern ideas. There he also meets the student Lucien Carr, who is avant-garde. Thanks to his charm, his physical attractiveness and his unconventional behavior, Lucien soon becomes Allen Ginsberg's object of fascination. Gradually, a relationship develops between Allen and Lucien, who integrates Allen into his circle of friends, which includes the poets William S. Burroughs , Jack Kerouac and Burroughs childhood friend David Kammerer. David, who has been in love with Lucien for a long time, is annoyed that a strong bond has developed between Allen and Lucien. David followed Lucien to New York and despite his intellect works as a janitor. Lucien, on the other hand, uses his charisma to play David against everyone.

Meanwhile, the connection between Lucien and Allen deepens and both discover similarities that lie in an emotionally difficult past and a passion for writing. Burroughs, Ginsberg and Carr inspire one another and are eager to break social and literary conventions. Lucien is friends with the ex-football player Jack Kerouac , who lives with his girlfriend and later wife Edie. He introduces everyone to Jack.

Along with overturning conventions, the Libertine Circle , made up of Allen, Lucien, Jack, and William, is also trying to undermine authorities. With their reckless adventures, they indignant parents and deans alike. Everyone perceives the rebellion as a liberating rebellion and is increasingly developing self-confidence. David, on the other hand, who is excluded from the Libertine Circle, is not up to this situation.

At the last moment he tries to prevent Lucien from getting on a ship with Jack. Lucien takes David aside and starts a walk with him. Shortly thereafter, David confronts Lucien in Riverside Park. Lucien then stabs David to death and his body is found floating in the Hudson River the next morning. Lucien is prosecuted and arrested for this act. Anyone who is asked by Lucien to make an exonerating statement has problems reconstructing the actual events of the night of the murder. He faces a difficult decision after finally rejecting Lucien's grounds for self-defense. He must either lie to the prosecutor in order to free his friend, or he must choose the truth and condemn Lucien.
