On the Road - Traveling (to German on the street is) a road movie from 2012, which on the same novel by the author Jack Kerouac is based. The main roles are Sam Riley and Garrett Hedlund , who go on a road trip through the United States together.
The world premiere took place on May 23, 2012. On the Road opened in German cinemas on October 4, 2012.
The film was shown as a free TV premiere on Tele 5 on December 7, 2014 .

The young, ambitious author Sal Paradise met Dean Moriarty, who was hungry for life, shortly after the death of his father. Both become friends and a little later they set off on a road trip west together. Always with the next stage in mind, both of them savor the intoxication of life to the full and go in search of freedom and true love. Intoxicated by just being, they enjoy the vastness of the landscape and their life with drugs, sex, jazz and bold thoughts. During their road trip they make new acquaintances, but also stop at old friends. These include Dean's love affairs Marylou and Camille, the philosophical Carlo Marx, Old Bull Lee and his wife Jane.
While Sal distances himself from Dean over time and increasingly considers a regular life, Dean also prefers the wild life in the course of the plot. After the wedding and the subsequent divorce from Marylou, his ex-wife is his constant companion on trips through the USA. This makes his new wife Camille angry, especially after their child is born and Dean does not want to give up his easy life.

The road movie On the Road received mixed to negative reviews. The Rotten Tomatoes website , which deals with movie reviews, scored 44% for the movie. The public opinion, however, showed that only 35% of the cinema viewers liked the film. In the Internet Movie Database is the way - On the Road with 6.1 of 10 points evaluated. At Metascore the film reached 56/100.

The novel of the same name by Jack Kerouac, on which On the Road is based, was published in 1957. Kerouac's novel was a bestseller in the 1960s and had a strong influence on the beat generation and the hippie movement . In his novel, Kerouac processed the experiences he and his friend had on a trip to the USA between 1947 and 1950. For this reason, many of the film characters are based on real people who lived in the vicinity of the author. Sal is considered Kerouac's alter ego , Neal Cassady as the model for the character of Dean Moriarty, William S. Burroughs for Old Bull Lee and Allen Ginsberg for the character Carlo Marx.
Kerouac himself also expressed the idea of a film adaptation and saw Marlon Brando as the ideal cast for the role of Dean. Jack Kerouac's offer to Brando was never answered by Brando.
In 1979, the director Francis Ford Coppola secured the film rights to the literary material and aimed for a film adaptation with Brad Pitt and Billy Crudup in the leading roles. The project, which was planned for 2001, was never realized.
