The Seagull (Original title: The Seagull ) is a film drama by Michael Mayer , which premiered on April 21, 2018 as part of the Tribeca Film Festival . Chekhov's play The Seagull , on which the script is based, is a tragic comedy about unrequited love and artistic ambition.

action

An aging actress Irina Arkadina visits her brother Pyotr Nikolayevich Sorin and their son Konstantin at their country estate in the summer. She is accompanied by her lover, the writer Boris Trigorin.

production

Stephen Karam's script is largely based on the play of the same name by Anton Chekhov , and many of the dialogues are almost literally taken over.

Annette Bening plays Irina Arkadina, Saoirse Ronan played Nina and Billy Howle played Konstantin. Ronan and Howle were previously seen together in On Chesil Beach .

Filming took place at Arrow Park Lake & Lodge, now a wedding venue in Monroe, NY . The representative country house in Italian style was built in 1909 in a spacious park area with a lake. Almost all indoor and outdoor shots took place in this ambience. The movie was filmed in the summer of 2015 within 21 days, however, post-production and publishing withdrew for various reasons: Michael Mayer was due to other commitments at the theater little time for the film came to be that movie stars Do not Die in Liverpool with Bening in the leading role had meanwhile been completed and the premieres of the two films - both on distribution by Sony Pictures Classics - should not collide.

The costumes were created by costume designer Ann Roth, who won an Oscar in 1997 and was nominated for three other Oscars .

The film premiered on April 21, 2018 at the Tribeca Film Festival and was released in US theaters on May 11, 2018.

So far, the film has won over 68 percent of Rotten Tomatoes critics .
