action

The young British actor Peter Turner falls in love with his famous but much older American colleague Gloria Grahame.

Biographical background

The American film actress and musical artist Gloria Grahame made it to New York Broadway, where she was discovered for the film by Hollywood producer Louis B. Mayer in the 1940s. After her film debut in 1944, she aroused two years later in a supporting role in Isn't Life Beautiful? Attention, received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress in 1948 for her role in Crossfire and an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in City of Illusions in 1953 . Grahame's second husband was director Nicholas Ray , from whom she divorced in 1952. Her fourth husband became his son Tony, with whom she already had a relationship during her marriage to Nicholas Ray when he was still a minor. She had children with father and son. She also had a relationship with the actor Peter Turner. The film is based on Turner's memoir, Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool , which was released in 1987.

production

Directed by Paul McGuigan , while Matt Greenhalgh adapted Turner's memoir for the film.

The film was shot in Liverpool, London and Pinewood Studios . Rear projections were used for the scenes set in New York City and Malibu . The scene with Vanessa Redgrave was filmed on a day off when she was in the Almeida Theater opposite Ralph Fiennes in Shakespeare's Richard III. stood on the stage.

The soundtrack was composed by J. Ralph . The song You Shouldn't Look at Me That Way , which can be heard in the credits of the film , was written by Elvis Mitchell and sung by the British singer-songwriter Elvis Costello .

Age rating

In the USA, the film received an R rating from the MPAA , which corresponds to a rating of 17 and over. In Germany the film is FSK 6 . The reason for the release states: “The film, told in a calm and very sensitive way, focuses entirely on its likeable characters, their feelings and conflicts, which are also highlighted in flashbacks. Preschool children can be overwhelmed by the issues of illness and death, as well as the emotional intensity of the film. But already 6-year-olds are able to distance themselves sufficiently from what is happening, which hardly offers them any starting point for their own experience. "

Reviews

So far, the film has won over 80 percent of Rotten Tomatoes ' critics .

Antje Wessels recognizes an interesting narrative trick in Paul McGuigan's film: "At first he tells part of the story exclusively from Peter's point of view and thus not only leaves some elementary questions about the relationship open, but also Gloria gradually appears in an inglorious light, he finally changes perspective and goes to Gloria's side. This not only ensures that the viewer can identify with both characters equally, it also gives the film a nice dynamic - and those who are not that familiar with the actress' vita might even experience a twist-like surprise. " Wessels sums up, with its attention to detail, the biographical drama actually looked like a film that could have been made in the late 1970s. Even if Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool might be lacking in highlights in the last resort, it wasn't just the two main actors who made the film worth seeing.

Björn Hayer of the Neue Zürcher Zeitung says that even if you sometimes disparagingly accuse Hollywood cinema of its emotional pathos, McGuigan has mastered the high level of artistry that is necessary to create it in style, and he knows how to create atmospheres and entire states of mind in pointed recordings. About Annette Bening Hayer says these mime those Hollywood diva who once with roles in not Is not life beautiful? or City of Illusions became famous with great passion and the necessary fragility. Ann Mayer from SRF also praises Bening, whose portrayal of the aging Hollywood diva is simply breathtaking.

In her review, Wendy Ide of Screen International highlights the first-class performances of both leading actors and the great supporting actors who could emerge as winners from the upcoming film awards season.
