Elvis Mitchell (* 1958 in Highland Park , Michigan ) is an American film critic , journalist and presenter .

Life

Elvis Mitchell was born in Highland Park, near Detroit . After graduating in English from Wayne State University in 1980 , he quickly became a film critic and wrote for magazines such as Fort Worth Star-Telegram , LA Weekly , Detroit Free Press and the New York Times .

At the end of the 1980s, he was on the television station PBS with his short-lived show The Edge , in which he presented general and special film reviews, also as a presenter. Since 1996 he has had his own radio show The Treatment on KCRW-FM , which is broadcast nationwide and via podcast . In addition to this, he also appeared frequently on the NPR radio station's Weekend Edition as a commentator and critic on cultural matters.

After Janet Maslin resigned as chief film critic for the New York Times in late 1999 , he was her successor. He himself was replaced in 2004 by the new dual leadership around AO Scott and Manohla Dargis . At the same time, he was a frequent lecturer at the renowned Harvard University .

In the summer of 2011, it was announced that Mitchell had been hired as the curator of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art to present a series of films on independent film .
