History and architecture

inside view

The previous building was essentially Romanesque and also served as a castle chapel. It was a compact building with a west tower. The choir and the nave were Gothic changed. According to old records, the church was equipped with five altars and a Gerkammer. The building was probably also used as a fortified church, it was built on a steep slope and stood in the middle of a walled cemetery. The parish was demarcated from Gummersbach in 1536 .

The current three - aisled neo - Gothic hall church with buttresses drawn inwards was built in 1867 according to plans by Vincenz Statz from unplastered ashlar masonry instead of the previous building. It was donated by the Counts of Stolberg. The grand oratory and the sacristy are located at the three-sided enclosed choir , with a roof turret crowned. The west tower is in front of the three-aisled, four-bay vaulted hall. In the interior, groined vaults rest on slender granite columns , the choir is vaulted with ribs. The von Fürstenberg family donated the glass painting in the choir in 1917.

Furnishing

High altar

The high altar with a three-part top was made around 1867. The tabernacle is integrated into it. Biblical scenes can be seen in the upper part. On the left is a scene from the Gospel of Luke , on the right the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist is shown.

The new altar originally stood in the St. Barbara church in Hürth-Gleuel, which was profaned in 2005 . Another altar from the church was converted into an ambo . So the celebration altar and ambo form a unit.

Mary Altar

The left side altar shows Mary with the child. It was donated by Count Cajus Stolberg zu Stolberg and his wife Marie Sophie Reichsfreiin von Löe, a niece of Count Paul von Merveldt. The alliance coat of arms of the two families is located under the statue of Mary .

St. John's Altar

The right side altar was dedicated to St. Consecrated Johannes Baptist . The church patron is shown with a raised index finger in the form of a penitential preacher. John stands on a wooden top on the stone altar, in which the tabernacle is integrated. The sacrifice of Isaac can be seen on the front of the altar .

Baptismal font

The baptismal font is next to the Johannes altar. The base is made of Lindlar sandstone . The Babestschaft is marked with 1753. The original of the bowl had cracked and was replaced according to the model. The lid was added in the 19th century. The edge is labeled with JJ Bleissemin, Cologne. The octagonal bowl represents the seven days of the week and the resurrection of Jesus .

The organ was installed in 1897 by the organ building company A. Sauermann from Frielingsdorf. The instrument with cone chest is equipped with twelve registers . It was cast on September 7, 1346 by Johann von Treveres. The inscription on the neck in Gothic minuscule is framed by applied cords. This bell is considered the oldest example of a bell with Gothic minuscules in the Bergisches Land .

The Elisabeth bell with a diameter of 99 cm weighs 650 kg and is tuned to the tone g. It was cast in 1824 by Georg Claren from Sieglar, decorated with the coat of arms of the then patron and castle owner Paul von Merveldt.
