Ann Roth

Ann Roth (born October 30, 1931 in Hanover , Pennsylvania ) is an American costume designer .

Life

The daughter of a farmer, after graduating in design from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh in 1953, first worked as a set painter at the Pittsburgh Opera before she got the chance to become the assistant to costume designer Irene Sharaff on Broadway in 1957 . Starting in 1958, she herself made numerous Broadway productions and was nominated three times for the Tony Award as a costume designer between 1976 and 1986 . She has also been working for Hollywood productions since the mid-1960s .

Ann Roth won the 1997 Oscar for Best Costume Designer for The English Patient . She was also nominated three times for A Place in the Heart (1985), The Talented Mr. Ripley (2000) and The Hours - From Eternity to Eternity (2003). In 1975 Roth received the British Film Award , Best Costumes Category , for Grasshopper Day . In 2003 she received the Hollywood Discovery Award for Lifetime Achievement.
