Reviews

Todd McCarthy wrote in Variety magazine on September 10, 2007 that the film showed family neuroses and bad behavior that a therapist should be more concerned with than Noah Baumbach. The film seems more like a " collection of fascinating scenes " than a fully thought-out and mature drama.

Michael Rechtshaffen wrote in The Hollywood Reporter on September 1, 2007 that the film was an " excellently played " tragic comedy. The portrayals of Nicole Kidman and Jennifer Jason Leigh would be some of the actresses best work. Baumbach has a comedic flair, which is one of the " most original and moving " in the industry.

Nicole Kidman and the film for Best Comedy were nominated for a Satellite Award in 2007. Jennifer Jason Leigh was nominated for the 2007 Chicago Film Critics Association Award . The cast and the film for Best Picture were nominated for the Gotham Award in 2007.
