18-year-old freshman Tracy has felt quite lonely since moving to New York City. Somehow she imagined university life to be more exciting and glamorous. At first she thinks she has found a friend in Tony, but then his jealous friend Nicolette steps in. In order not to become completely lonely, Tracy, on the advice of her mother, contacts the daughter of her boyfriend, the fun-loving Brooke, her future stepsister. The 30-year-old spin trainer may be a bit wacky, but manages to save Tracy from boredom. As the personified Mistress America Brooke Tracy leads through the city of New York. Brooke also has a crazy plan: she wants to open her own restaurant. Soon, however, Tracy realizes that Brooke is not as much in control of her life as it seems.

criticism

The film received mostly positive reactions. At Rotten Tomatoes , 82% of reviews are positive, out of a total of 152 reviews. The film service judges that the film is "a screwball comedy about two dissimilar women, which is highly accelerated in its best moments, conceived as an amusing and playful rejection of self-optimization and flexible life plans". Above all, “the impressive leading actress and co-author Greta Gerwig” would provide “delightful irritations, incidents and lovable awkward moments”.

Awards

Greta Gerwig won the Indiana Film Journalists Association Award 2015 for Best Supporting Actress. The film also received 2nd Prize for Best Original Screenplay at the Florida Film Critics Circle Awards 2015. It also received a nomination for Best Ensemble, which was also recognized by the Casting Society of America (Outstanding Achievement in Casting - Low Budget Feature - comedy).
