Iossif Markowitsch Bakschtein

Iossif Markowitsch Bakschtein ( Russian Иосиф Маркович Бакштейн , also Joseph Backstein ; * 1945 in Moscow ) is a Russian curator and museum director.

life and work

Bakschtein studied at the Moscow State Institute of Electronics and Mathematics . In the subjects sociology of art and cultural studies he received his doctorate ( candidate of sciences ) at the Institute of Sociology of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR .

Bakschtein is artistic director of the State Museum and Exhibition Center ROSSISO, the Moscow Biennale , director of the Institute for Problems of Modern Art and a member of the Association of Art Historians . He is curator of more than 30 exhibitions, including 1999 for the Russian pavilion at the 54th Venice Biennale , 2002 Sergej Bratkow at the 25th São Paulo Biennale and 2006 Norman Foster : Raum und Zeit in the Pushkin Museum , Moscow.

Bakschtein was awarded the medal of the Russian Art Academy and is the author of numerous texts.

Bakschtein was a member of the search committee for dOCUMENTA (13) .
