Stefan Bauer (born December 14, 1956 in Recklinghausen ) is a German vibraphonist and marimba player of creative jazz .

Live and act

Bauer, who has been a pianist in local jazz bands since he was 15 and played the trombone in concert ensembles, studied trombone at the Dortmund University of Music between 1975 and 1978 and performed with Reinhard Glöder . Since 1976 he has dealt with the vibraphone, which he then studied from 1978 at Berklee College of Music and the University of Music and Theater Hamburg .

In the 1980s he founded his own formations with musicians such as Christof Lauer , Charlie Mariano and Norma Winstone . He also worked with Rachel Gould , Uli Beckerhoff , Theo Jörgensmann , the Vienna Art Orchestra , the NDR Bigband , Doug Hammond , Vinny Golia , Eckard Koltermann , Klaus König and Thomas Hufschmidt .

In 1984 he founded the Drümmele Maa ensemble with Christoph Haberer and Ramesh Shotham , with whom he toured Europe, Africa and India and performed together with the Cologne Saxophone Mafia and in 1993 with Greetje Bijma . His quartet with Matthias Nadolny , Tim Wells and Thomas Alkier went on tour with Eje Thelin in 1987 .

As part of the 1988 Summer Olympics , he gave a solo concert in the art disco in Seoul . He has lived in Canada since 1990, where he works with musicians such as Don Thompson , Nancy Walker, Knut Haugsoen and Marilyn Lerner . His album Best of Two Worlds , which he presented at JazzFest Berlin in 1996 , was nominated for the Juno Award in 1998 , the album Summer's Embrace for the Prairie Award. In 2002 he made guest appearances in Africa with his world music group Lingo , to which Michael Heupel also belonged at times . In his group Voyage he also works with Judi Silvano and Gerry Hemingway .

Bauer also teaches at various institutions such as the Folkwang Hochschule Essen , the University of Manitoba and the Brandon University .

CBC / Radio-Canada dedicated an artist portrait to him in its Global Village series .
