Uli Beckerhoff
Ulrich "Uli" Beckerhoff (born December 6, 1947 in Münster ) is a German jazz musician ( trumpet and flugelhorn ). From 1991 he was professor for jazz trumpet and ensemble direction at the Folkwang University in Essen .
Live and act
Uli Beckerhoff first studied law , then music in Münster and Cologne. At the international jazz jamboree in Osnabrück he received first prize as best trumpeter in 1966 and 1967 . He first attracted international attention at the jazz festival in Loosdrecht (Netherlands), where he also won first prize as a trumpeter.
In the early 1970s he founded the Jazztrack quintet with saxophonist Wolfgang Engstfeld , which included bassist Sigi Busch , drummer Heinrich Hock and various pianists. He then co-founded the groups Riot (with Andy Lumpp , Rainer Linke and Wolfgang Ekholt ) and Changes , with whom he also went on concert tours through Europe, produced a number of records and performed at almost all major jazz festivals in Europe.
Between 1970 and 1985 Beckerhoff consolidated his reputation as a technically adept, sensitive trumpeter and composer who was gifted with a wide range of expressions and who earned him a growing reputation. In 1973 and 1974 he was invited by Joachim Ernst Berendt to the New Jazz Meeting Baden-Baden and played with the Michael Gibbs Orchestra in 1975 at the Berlin Jazz Days . In 1976 he represented ARD at the EBU concert in Barcelona. In 1977 he was invited to an international Trumpet Summit in Amsterdam .
In 1979 the jazz guitarist Volker Kriegel invited him, together with Engstfeld, to an Africa tour of his Mild Maniac Orchestra sponsored by the Goethe-Institut . Beckerhoff performed in what was then the GDR at the invitation of the state artist agency . With Jazztrack he received the 1st prize of the Westphalian Art Association in Münster and, as a soloist, the Music Prize of the City of Bremen . He has also worked as a teacher since the early 1970s, including at jazz workshops in Trossingen, Münster, Weikersheim, Bremen and Burghausen.
Beckerhoff began a solo career in the mid-1980s; he mainly played with his own bands and projects and recorded his first records under his own name. In 1983 he founded the Uli Beckerhoff Group , which initially included Christof Lauer , Bob Degen , Gunnar Plümer , John Marshall and Thomas Cremer . Since 1992 the band has played in a line-up with Matthias Nadolny , Michael Berger, Gunnar Plümer and Jo Thönes . In 1987 and 1988 he played in the Uli Beckerhoff Trio with Jasper van't Hof and John Marshall.
Beckerhoff is considered a virtuoso trumpeter with an extraordinary range and interesting sound.
Over the years Beckerhoff has worked with many German and international jazz musicians, including Stan Getz , Leon Thomas , Manfred Schoof , Albert Mangelsdorff , Joachim Kühn , Zbigniew Seifert , John Taylor , Adelhard Roidinger , John Abercrombie , Maria João , Norma Winstone , Jon Balke , Arild Andersen , Jon Christensen , Alex Riel , Marilyn Mazur and Michel Herr . He also helped the United Jazz and Rock Ensemble from.
With the Australian dancer and choreographer Rhys Martin , he worked on the piece Audition at the end of the 1980s , which was performed with great success at the theaters in Basel , Bochum , Bremen , Düsseldorf and Freiburg im Breisgau .
As a composer, Beckerhoff received orders for film scores and radio productions; he wrote for the NDR big band and symphony orchestra.
