Wolfgang Ekholt

Wolfgang Ekholt (* 1952 in Recklinghausen ) is a German drummer of modern jazz .

Ekholt played guitar and drums from 1965. In 1969 and 1970 he took part in the Remscheid jazz courses. Then he studied at the Folkwang School in Essen and at the PH Münster. He has been active as a freelance musician since 1975. He first played in Uli Beckerhoff's group Riot , for which he also composed and with which he also recorded ( Green and Blue 1977, Black Hill 1978). Then he played with Ed Kröger ( Trombone Jazz , 1986), but also with Joachim Kühn , Kenny Wheeler , Lee Konitz , Herb Geller , Richie Beirach and John Abercrombie . Together with Jan Klare and Tom Lorenz , he founded the group Das böse Ding in 1993 , to which he belonged for fifteen years and with which he performed at well-known jazz festivals at home and abroad. He was also involved in the recordings of Norbert Gottschalk and Dominique Horwitz and leads the Jazz Smells trio , which also includes David Jehn on double bass and Klaus Fey on saxophone.

Ekholt has been a teacher at the Westphalian School for Music in Münster since 1976 . From 1979 to 1981 he had a teaching position at the Cologne University of Music . Since 1984 Ekholt, in addition to u. a. Hartmut Kracht , Ed Kröger and Norbert Gottschalk lecturer at the Coesfeld jazz workshop. Between 1987 and 2003 he was a lecturer in the popular music program at the Hamburg University of Music . Since 2005 he has been teaching at the University of the Arts in Bremen .
