Eckard Koltermann (born November 14, 1958 in Wanne-Eickel ) is a German bass clarinetist , saxophonist and composer . As a composer he is self-taught and works in the border area between contemporary composition and free improvisation.

Act

After studying music ethnology in Berlin and bass clarinet studies in Amsterdam with Harry Sparnaay , he began his professional music career in the early 1980s. Koltermann co-founded the pit sound orchestra and the clarinet quartet Cl-4 . From 1985 to 2007 he played in Willem van Manen 's Contraband , to which Theo Jörgensmann , his long-time musical partner in the German Clarinet Duo , also belonged. In the mid-80s, Koltermann also worked in the trio KoKoKo with Klaus Koch and Franz Koglmann . From 1988 to 1999 he was musical director of the Schloss Theater Moers . In 2004 he founded his own quartet with the pianist Stevko Busch , the double bassist Markus Conrads and Achim Krämer on drums. This also appears together with Paul van Kemenade and Wolter Wierbos .

His compositional works include big band pieces in modern jazz, instrumental chamber music, literary settings, theater and dance theater music as well as three chamber operas and two experimental music films. He is passionate about setting literature.
