Willem van Manen (born September 3, 1940 in Amsterdam ) is a Dutch trombonist , composer and band leader.

Act

Van Manen has been a musician since 1968. In addition to his activities as a jazz musician , he made a name for himself as an interpreter of new music ; among others since 1972 as a founding member of Orkest De Volharding . He started in the groups of Theo Loevendie , Boy Edgar and Hans Dulfer , later he played with Willem Breuker (first in the Instant Composers Pool and for many years in the Willem Breuker Kollektief ), but also with Gunter Hampel and Leo Cuypers. His own groups were Boventoon ( Wessel-Ilcken-Preis 1974 ) and the Springband , where three members of the band, bassist Harry Miller , trombonist Joep Maessen , trumpeter Jeff Reynolds , and the trumpeter were killed in a traffic accident during a tour Louis Lanzig and the saxophonist Maarten van Norden were critically injured. It was only after a two-year break that van Manen founded a new band, the large-format Contraband .

Van Manen taught trombone at the Sweelinck Conservatorium Amsterdam and was active in organizing the Dutch music scene for many years (Bim Huis Amsterdam, Fonds voor de Scheppende Toonkunst). With Misha Mengelberg and Willem Breuker, he is considered an influential personality in the Dutch jazz scene.

In 1992 he was awarded the Boy Edgar Prize , the Jazz Prize of the Netherlands . In 1997 he was made a Knight of the Order of Orange-Nassau .
