Maarten van Norden

Hans Maarten van Norden (born November 1, 1955 in Amsterdam ) is a Dutch jazz musician ( tenor saxophone , clarinet ) and composer .

Live and act

Van Norden started his musical career in the mid-1970s with the Willem Breuker Kollektief , to which he belonged until the dissolution in 2012 and whose albums he is involved in. He studied classical clarinet with Jan Koene and jazz saxophone with Harvey Weinapple as well as composition with Louis Andriessen at the Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag . Except for Breuker he also worked with the Orkest de Volharding , the Contraband of Willem van Manen and his own jazz rock band Future Shock .

The performance of his composition Cookie Girl by the Orkest de Volharding at the Bang on a Can Festival in New York City in 1990 brought him into contact with the younger American composers and led to postgraduate studies at Yale University , where he studied with Jacob Druckman and Allen in 1996 Forte passed his Master of Music . In 2003 he graduated from the Contemporary Music through Non-Western Techniques course at the Sweelinck Conservatorium . As a composer he wrote for the Radio Filharmonisch Orkest and the Radio Kamer Orkest ( VARA -Matinee) as well as for the Nederlands Blazers Ensemble , Koor Nieuwe Muziek , the Metropole Orkest , the Slagwerkgroep Den Haag and the Aurelia Saxofoonkwart . His works have been performed in the Concertgebouw , but also at festivals such as the Crossing Border Festival in Toronto, the Huddersfield New Music Festival , the Warsaw Autumn , the North Sea Jazz Festival , and the Nederlandse Muziekdagen (1998, 2001, 2005, 2006). He has also written film music ( Mene Tekel , film by Pieter Fleury) and teaches at the Utrecht Conservatory .
