Orkest De Volharding

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Orkest De Volharding was a Dutch chamber music ensemble, whose wind orchestra-like line-up of three trumpets, a horn , three trombones, three saxophones and a flute was extended to include a piano and a double bass in the style of a big band . The ensemble , which was founded in 1972 and existed until 2010, earned a reputation for interpreting music between jazz and new music .

history

Louis Andriessen conceived his composition De Volharding (Eng. "Perseverance") in 1971/72 , which took up the ideas of minimalism but was intended to have a mobilizing effect. Willem Breuker advised him to use a mixed ensemble of professional jazz and classical musicians for the performance . The specially assembled ensemble, with which Andriessen practiced his composition and premiered it in May 1972 in the Carré Theater , was ready to play other compositions as well, arrangements of boogie-woogies by Jimmy Yancey as well as the hymn of the Viet Cong, and usually did not want to perform in the concert hall, but in the manner of street musicians at demonstrations, political events and district festivals. The orchestra initially functioned without a conductor, without hierarchy and with a lot of idealism. However, the ensemble only played music that was specially composed or at least arranged for the orchestra. Due to the increasingly complex projects and the relocation of activities to the concert hall, the ensemble has worked with conductors since 1989, initially with Cess van Zeeland. With its long-time conductor Jurjen Hempel , the ensemble went on concert tours through Germany, France, Russia and the USA, and in 1995 also with the German Clarinet Duo in the Netherlands .

The Orkest De Volharding has commissioned and performed more than three hundred works , mostly from composers living in the Netherlands. Due to the cancellation of grants from the Dutch Podiumkunsten Fund , the orchestra ended its work; on February 21, 2010 there was his last concert.
