Paul Termos (born January 15, 1952 in Hilversum , † May 20, 2003 ) was a Dutch composer and alto saxophonist in the field of contemporary music and free jazz .

Live and act

Paul Termos studied composition with Ton de Leeuw at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam in the early 1970s . During this time he dealt with improvised music first on the guitar and the clarinet, but then switched to the alto saxophone a few years later. Termos has been part of the Amsterdam improvisation scene since the early 1980s and played with the ICP Orchestra ( Herbie Nichols / Thelonious Monk project) as well as with Guus Janssen ( Pok , 1988/89), Maarten Altena , in a trio with Raoul van der Weide and with the saxophone sextet De Zes Winden ; from 1985 on he also gave solo concerts and recorded a first solo album ( Claxon 86.17 ).

In 1988 he formed a ten-member band, the Termos Tentet , to whom u. a. Ernst Glerum , Michael Vatcher , Wolter Wierbos and Peter van Bergen , and with whom he recorded the album Shakes and Sounds . This formation was followed by the nine-member ensemble called Termos Dubble Express , which also included two sopranos . In 1995 he played in the ensemble of cornet player Eric Boeren ( Cross Breeding ). In the late 1990s, Termos returned to free improvisation and played in a duo with Wiek Hijmans and Misha Mengelberg . Shortly before his death, the albums Paul Termos Sessions Vol. 1 & 2 were created , which document the two duets.

As a composer, Paul Termos wrote music for artists and ensembles such as Frances-Marie Uitti , Guus Janssen, the Mondraan Kwartet, Maarten Altena Ensemble, the Dutch Woodwind Ensemble and the Orkest De Volharding . He also worked as a teacher, one of his students was the saxophonist Bart van der Putten .

The critics Richard Cook and Brian Morton point out that, although Termos worked mainly in the field of new music, but also recorded some powerful pieces in the idiom of post-bop on albums; they refer to earlier albums such as Death Dance of Principles (1992) and Termos Works (1999) as well as the duo sessions shortly before his death.

A Paul Termos Festival was held in 2008 in honor of the musician , at which artists such as Ab Baars , Gijs Levelt, Ig Henneman , Gijsbrecht Royé, Ned McGowan, Guus Janssen, Michiel Scheen, Eric Boeren , Wiek Hijmans, Guus Janssen, Raoul van der Weide , Wim Janssen, Michael Moore , Wolter Wierbos and Ernst Glerum performed.
