Wiek Hijmans

Wiek Hijmans (* 1967 ) is a Dutch electric guitarist and composer who is influenced by jazz and rock . He is also considered one of the pioneers who used the electric guitar in contemporary classical music.

Hijmans has been playing the guitar since he was eleven. In 1991 he received his diploma as performing musician at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam. In 1997 he received the Professional Studies Certificate from the Manhattan School of Music in New York, where he studied with David Starobin . In the same year he received the Andres Segovia Award for his "extraordinary guitar playing" . A Fulbright scholarship enabled him to further perfect his education.

Hijmans is a member of the Maarten Altena Ensemble and co-leader of the American-Dutch ensemble TONK . He worked as a sideman a. a. with improvising musicians like John Zorn , Derek Bermel , Anthony Braxton , Ernst Reijseger , Peter van Bergen , Roscoe Mitchell , Nick Didkovsky , Oene van Geel and Peter Kowald and performed with the violinist Anna McMichael, the Orkest De Volharding and with classical ensembles like the Brooklyn Philharmonic Orchestra , the Nieuw Sinfoniëtta Amsterdam , the Ebony Band and the Mondrian String Quartet . In 2002 he released the solo album Electric Solo , which was followed in 2004 by the album Classic Electric . He has received several composition commissions from the Dutch Fonds voor de Scheppende Toonkunst .
