Steve Martland (born October 10, 1954 in Liverpool , † May 7, 2013 ) was an English composer .

Life

Steve Martland studied composition with Louis Andriessen in the Netherlands . His interest in the role of the composer in society is evident. a. in his commitment to teaching music in schools. He has directed numerous composition projects at home and abroad and initiated the annual composition course “Strike Out” for school children.

He mainly worked with artists who are not dependent on classical institutions for their work - Dutch and American groups, freelance musicians and in particular his own Steve Martland Band, which presents his music on international tours. In 1998 he worked with the band Spiritualized on a project for the Flux Festival in Edinburgh . Martland's music was widely used in movies and TV series.

Martland's great orchestral work Babi Yar (1983) premiered at almost the same time in the United States, conducted by Leonard Slatkin with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra , and in Great Britain, with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and Nicolas Cleobury . Then Babi Yar was recorded for the legendary Factory Label . Martland eventually reworked the score. The world premiere of this revised version took place in Glasgow under the direction of Jurjen Hempel with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra as part of a Martland evening supported by the BBC and the Royal Philharmonic Society .

Martland's music, usually played with amplifiers, has often been interpreted choreographically. Drill was danced at the Sydney Opera House and Crossing the Border by the Amsterdam National Ballet. Danceworks, a composition commissioned and premiered by the London Contemporary Dance Theater , has been staged in numerous theaters around the world. The choreographies by Les Grands Ballets Canadiens from Montreal and Ballet Tech from New York deserve special mention . Martland's Remix received the SACD Prize for Dance Film based on a choreography by Aletta Collins for the BBC. In 2005 Martland got a commission from the Henri Oguike Dance Company , from which his composition Tiger Dancing grew. Martland's music was also used as theme music for international television and radio programs. Danceworks can be heard as the theme music for a Dutch television program and Principia was adopted as the theme music for the BBC radio program The Music Machine .

Commissioned by percussionist Evelyn Glennie and the King's Singers , Martland wrote his frequently performed choral work Street Songs, which was later performed under the direction of John Eliot Gardiner with the Monteverdi Choir and drummer Colin Currie to project a film by the Quay Brothers .

In 2006 and 2007 Martland was Composer in Residence at the ETNA Music Festival in Sicily. His last orders include the sample pieces for the TROMP International Music Festival and Competition. This group of works includes Starry Night for marimba and string quartet and Sea Songs, which premiered in Denmark in 2012 under the direction of Paul Hillier with the Ars Nova Copenhagen vocal ensemble .

Martland passed away unexpectedly in his sleep on May 7, 2013, at the age of 58.
