Brothers Quay

The twin brothers Stephen and Timothy Quay (born June 17, 1947 in Norristown , Pennsylvania ), better known under the name Brothers Quay or Quay Brothers, are American filmmakers and influential stop-motion artists. They became known to a larger audience in 1986 with their stop-motion animated film The Street of Crocodiles, based on the 1934 story of the same name by the Polish-Jewish writer Bruno Schulz .

Life

Both have lived and worked in England since the late 1960s . After studying in Philadelphia, they studied at the Royal College of Art in London. The first short films made during this period have not survived.

After several years in the Netherlands, they returned to London in 1980 and founded the production company "Koninck Studios" together with their former fellow student Keith Griffiths, which is now in Southwark , in the south of London .

The Quay Brothers' films show a wide range of topics on the work of writers such as Franz Kafka , Bruno Schulz , Robert Walser and Michel de Ghelderode . The first work was done with the Polish film director and illustrator Walerian Borowczyk and the graphic artist Jan Lenica .

Many of her films have been shown and awarded at international film festivals. Street of Crocodiles received a nomination for the Palme d'Or at the 1986 Cannes Film Festival .

The Quay Brothers also produced music videos for His Name is Alive, Michael Penn , Sparklehorse , 16 Horsepower and Peter Gabriel . The brothers also designed commercials for MTV , Nikon , "Murphy's beer" and "Slurpee".
