16 Horsepower (also Sixteen Horsepower ) was an American rock band from Denver , Colorado . The band combined different music genres in their style, but is primarily attributed to alternative country .

history

Less known in their homeland, 16 Horsepower have been particularly successful in Europe since the release of the album "Sackcloth 'N' Ashes". The band played a melodious mix of folk , bluegrass , gospel and alternative rock paired with Christian song lyrics; sometimes their music was Gothic - Country designated. In addition to the usual instruments of a rock band, 16 Horsepower often used old, sometimes historical instruments to accompany the songs, such as a hurdy-gurdy in the song "Worry". Edwards often used the country, blues and folk banjo that characterizes many songs. In some of the earlier pieces an old Chemnitz concertina could be heard, but according to the band it "just fell apart" at some point and had to be replaced by a newer model.

Most of the texts are by David Eugene Edwards , born in 1968, who grew up in the religious community of the Nazarene Church . His father died early, and as a boy he often wandered the country with his grandfather, who tried to convert people with fire-and-brimstone sermons. The focus of the song lyrics by 16 Horsepower is always on pro-Christian ideas.

On April 6, 2005, 16 Horsepower announced their breakup, which they justified with problems of a political and spiritual nature. The members broke new ground in the Woven Hand (Edwards) and Lilium (Jean-Yves Tola and Pascal Humbert) projects .
