Spiritualized is a British rock band from the 1990s, which originally emerged from the band Spacemen 3 . In the meantime, the band has established itself rather as a solo project by Jason Pierce , who uses different musicians for each album. Musically, the band is assigned to the styles of space rock , shoegazing and psychedelic rock , whereby the spiritual influences in particular are decisive for the sound of the band.
history
In 1990 Spiritualized was founded by former Spacemen 3 members Jason Pierce aka J Spaceman (vocals), Mark Refoy (guitar), Will Carruthers (bass) and Jonny Mattock (drums). After the media-effective conflict with Peter Kember, the second creative head behind Spacemen 3 , Pierce and the band released a cover of The Troggs song "Anyway That You Want Me" under the name Spiritualized . His then partner Kate Radley finally completed the line-up as keyboardist and second voice.
The first two albums Lazer Guided Melodies (1992) and Pure Phase (1995) were clearly shaped by shoegazing and space rock attitudes. After the first album Carruthers, Refoy and Mattock left the band, whereupon Pierce looked for replacement musicians and extended the band name to "Spiritualized Electric Mainline" for the second album. Kate Radley had a covert relationship with Richard Ashcroft and eventually married him in 1995. So she left Jason behind, but stayed up to and including the recordings for the third album. It was not until 1997 that she officially and permanently left the band.
With a new line-up (Sean Cook - bass, Mike Mooney - guitar, Damon Reece - drums) Pierce finally recorded the successful third album Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space . Shaped by the loss of love for the beautiful Kate, it is considered a masterpiece of aggression and melancholy. In 1997 it reached number 4 on the British charts. Gospel choirs, string and wind orchestras, the hypnotic singing of Jason Pierce and the unusual rhythm give the album the characteristic garb of spirituality , soul and psychedelia . The band received their greatest appreciation when they finally got to perform at the Royal Albert Hall in 1997 . Jason Pierce saw the band name from now on as a trademark for a certain type of music, which has been symbolized by the " Registered Trademark " symbol in the band name since the third album : Spiritualized®.
Nevertheless, Pierce threw the entire successful team out of the band in 1999 and began single-handedly with the recordings for the fourth album. Cook, Moony and Reece then formed the band Lupine Howl. With his newly founded label "Spaceman", the importance of a follower band finally faded into the background. Rather, John Coxon (Spring Heel Jack), with his experience in electronic music, played an important role in composing and producing the songs. The two following releases by Spiritualized® , Let It Come Down (2001) and Amazing Grace (2003), were still accompanied by gospel choirs and orchestras in typical rock style. In addition, the songs experienced influences from electro pop and country music .
In 2005, the band's activities ceased because Jason Pierce had a severe form of pneumonia and struggled with death for two weeks. Ignorant of his health, Pierce had already completed the songwriting for the sixth album before he was hospitalized. In the meantime, limited edition J Spaceman Guitar Loops were released in 2006. Behind it were improvisations by Jason Pierce with John Coxon (this is part of the band's current line-up) and Ashley Wales, which were created during the rehearsals for a sixth album after the discharge from the hospital. However, the CD is not listed as an official release from Spiritualized®. The official successor to Amazing Grace is called Songs In A & E and was released in 2008.
