Jurjen Hempel

Jurjen Hempel (* 1961 ) is a Dutch conductor.

Hempel studied orchestral conducting with David Porcelijn and Kenneth Montgomery at the Utrecht Conservatory and was also assistant to Edo de Waart , Hans Vonk and David Robertson . In 1990 he received his diploma and was appointed professor of conducting. He continued his training with Péter Eötvös in Hungary and attended master classes by Bernard Haitink and Lorin Maazel in Tanglewood .

In 1989 Hempel made his debut as a conductor with the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Dutch Radio and with the Dutch Radio Symphony Orchestra. In 1996 he received third place in the Sibelius Conducting Competition. From 1996–97 he was Valery Gergiev's assistant at the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra . In 1997 he made his debut as conductor of the Concertgebouw Orchestra .

He has worked with ensembles dedicated to contemporary music such as the Asko Ensemble , the Nieuw Ensemble , the Ensemble Contrechamps , the Schönberg Ensemble and the Orkest De Volharding . He was the first conductor to tour Germany, France, Russia and the USA with the Orkest De Volharding .

Between 2000 and 2002 he made his debut with the BBC Symphony Orchestra , the Orquestra Philharmonique de Liège , the Orquestra Nacional do Porto , the Orchestra del Teatro Comunale di Bologna and the Basel Symphony Orchestra . In 2005 he became musical director of the Basler Ensemble Contrechamps . In the same year he performed at the Proms in the Royal Albert Hall with the BBC Symphony Orchestra.
