Ter Veldhuis' compositions can be roughly divided into two categories: on the one hand there is classically influenced chamber music and orchestral works, on the other his so-called boombox music. This is music for solo instruments or ensembles that is performed together with electronically recorded sounds. To do this, he uses the Boombox, a portable CD player popular in the 1980s that played a major role in the urban youth culture of that time. Ter Veldhuis processes, among other things, authentic language material from television documentaries and interviews. Ter Veldhuis criticizes the dissonant compositions that predominate in contemporary classical music and writes mostly consonant, harmonic music. He himself describes his music as "avant pop".
