Paul Douglas Hillier (born February 9, 1949 in Dorchester , England ) is a British conductor , music director and singer ( baritone ). His specialty is early music and new music , especially the works of the composers Steve Reich and Arvo Pärt . Hillier studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama . He made his concert debut in 1974 in the Purcell Room in London.

Sound body

In 1974 Hillier founded the Hilliard Ensemble with tenor Paul Elliott and countertenor David James . Hillier remained the head of the ensemble until the Theater of Voices was founded in 1990. In addition to early music, this orchestra increasingly had a contemporary repertoire. With the 1992 album A Land of Pure Delight , Hillier recorded early American composers such as William Billings with the Chicago chamber choir His Majestie's Clerkes .

Hillier later became director of the Early Music Institute of the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University Bloomington . Until 2003, when he left the institute, he was also the choirmaster of the Pro Arte Singers. From 2001 to 2007 Hillier was Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir .

Since 2003 Hillier has been the chief conductor of the Ars Nova vocal ensemble in Copenhagen . In 2008 he was appointed Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Chamber Choir Ireland.

Hillier has recorded a number of solo albums, some with harpist Andrew Lawrence-King . The recordings have been released by the Harmonia Mundi , ECM Records , EMI , Finlandia and Hyperion Records labels .
