Arnold Dooyeweerd

Arnold Dooyeweerd (born July 31, 1946 in Amsterdam ) is a Dutch jazz and improvisation musician ( double bass ) who has been leading the Tuesday workshop in the Amsterdam Bimhuis since 1974 .

Live and act

Dooyeweerd founded his own trio before studying, with which he won the Amsterdam FAMOS jazz competition in 1965. During his studies at the Amsterdam Conservatory , he first joined the quartet of saxophonist Joop van Enkhuizen (1966–68) to play in the quintet of pianist Jan Rath from 1968 to 1970. Between 1968 and 1988 he regularly accompanied American jazz stars such as Ben Webster , Dexter Gordon , Don Byas , Johnny Griffin , Chet Baker , but also Art Taylor , Kenny Drew , Jimmy and Doug Raney and JR Monterose . He also performed in the Birds Club in Amsterdam with the trio of Tom Meyer (with drummer Max Bolleman) and guests such as Tom Jones and Yoko Ono . In 1972 he belonged to Rob van den Broeck's band Banten (with Ernst Reijseger , Jurre Haanstra and Hennie Vonk). The following year he was part of Boy Edgars Sound (with which the album Live in Shaffy was created).

Under the name Leen Brededuif Quartet , Dooyeweerd organized a free improvising group with Theo Loevendie , Misha Mengelberg and Martin van Duynhoven ; from 1977 he was part of Loevendie's quartet. Together with the pianist Peter Schön and the drummer John Engels he played in the quartet of the saxophonist Fred Leeflang ( Zwingen, Mannen, 1981). He also joins the group List of saxophonist Vera Vingerhoeds and together with drummer Martin Bunjes founded the Ensemble Vijf , which included tenor saxophonist Rinus Groeneveld and trombonists Toon van Ulsen and Joep Maessen. In the mid-1980s he was also a member of Niko Langenhuijsen's sextet , and between 1987 and 1990 he was also a member of Dick de Graaf's septet . In the 1990s he was on tour with his own quartet (with Wiek Hijmans, Tobias Delius and Bart van Helsdingen), but also with Frans Vermeerssen , Eric Vloeimans , Sylvia de Hartog and Anton Goudsmit . In 1996 Willem van Manen brought him into his contraband . He also worked in a trio with Jasper Blom and drummer Flin van Hemmen . He can also be heard on Marnix Busstra's albums and has composed for The Ploctones .

Since 1978 he worked at the Sweelinck Conservatorium as a main subject lecturer for jazz and improvisation music, but continued his workshop in the Bimhuis.
