Frans Vermeerssen

Frans Vermeerssen (* 1956 ) is a Dutch jazz saxophonist, band leader and composer.

Vermeerssen studied classical saxophone at the Stedelijk Conservatorium Groningen , then saxophone and improvisation at the Sweelinck Conservatorium Amsterdam and composition with Jacob ter Veldhuis . He played with Greetje Bijma and Alan Laurillards Noodband in 1982 at the Moers Festival . He was or is a member u. a. the Gerard Ammerlaan Orchestra and Octet , the Willem van Manen Contraband , the Bik Bent Braam , the Willem Breuker Kollektief , De Zes Winden , the Arend Niks Quartet and the Astronotes by Joost Buis .

Vermeerssen led several of his own formations such as TamTamFanfare (1982–1987), Africa Brass (1996–1998), No Can Do (2000–2004) and Bright Moments (2001–2003). Currently active are his bands All Ears (1986–1990, founded in 2003), Frans Vermeerssen Quartet (since 1991) and Talking Cows (since 2005).

In addition to compositions for his own groups, Vermeerssen wrote for the theater group Werk in Uitvoering . He composed the musical Turkwaas and pieces for wind ensemble. In 1984 he was awarded the Henri de Wolf Jazz Award . Vermeerssen teaches at the Arnhem Conservatory.
