Michiel Braam
Michiel Braam (born May 17, 1964 in Nijmegen ) is a Dutch jazz pianist and composer .
Live and act
Braam studied at the ArtEZ Conservatory in Arnhem , where he is the coordinator for Jazz & Pop. In 1986 he founded two bands, the Bik Bent Braam (with Angelo Verploegen , Eric Boeren , Wolter Wierbos , Peter Haex , Carl Ludwig Hübsch , Jan Willem van der Ham , Bart van der Putten , Frans Vermeerssen , Peter van Bergen , Frank Gratkowski , Jörg Brinkmann and Michael Vatcher ) and Bentje Braam .
In 1987 Michiel Braam received a composition commission from the Dutch radio ( NOS ). He wrote a piece for four clarinets and piano called Cows and Beasts . Besides Braams on the piano, the performers were the clarinetists Ab Baars , Theo Jörgensmann , Michael Moore and Louis Sclavis . The trio BraamDeJoodeVatcher followed in 1989 (with Wilbert de Joode and Michael Vatcher ) and in 2005 eBraam (previously called Wurli Trio), with Pieter Douma and Dirk-Peter Kölsch , and in 2011 Michiel Braam's Hybrid 10tet (eBraam, classical string quartet Matangi , Nils Wogram , Taylor Ho Bynum and Carl Ludwig Hübsch). Since 2015 Braam has been leading a third trio, called Nosa Otrobanda , which specialize primarily in the Antilles waltz.
Together with Frans Vermeerssen , he leads the sextet All Ears (with Herb Robertson , Frank Gratkowski , Wilbert de Joode and Michael Vatcher). He also works with musicians such as Louis Sclavis , George Lewis , Benjamin Herman , Han Bennink , Michael Moore , Ab Baars , Bo van de Graaf , Conny and Hannes Bauer and Steve Argüelles .
Prizes and awards
In 1988 he received the podium prize . In 1997 he was honored with the most important jazz prize in the Netherlands, the Boy Edgar Prize .
