Alfred Zeller

Alfred Zeller (born May 13, 1908 in Vienna , † March 11, 1976 ibid) was an Austrian agricultural chemist and plant physiologist .

Life

Zeller studied natural sciences at the University of Vienna since 1926 . He received his doctorate in 1930 with a doctoral thesis in the field of analytical chemistry . During his studies he worked for a few months as a research assistant for the crop scientist Theodor Roemer at the University of Halle . From 1930 he was an assistant at the Plant Physiological Institute of the University of Vienna. There he completed his habilitation in 1937. From 1946 he taught as associate professor at the University of Vienna. After working at several other research institutes, in 1958 he was entrusted with the management of the Federal Agricultural and Chemical Research Institute in Vienna . From 1960 until his retirement in 1973 he was director of this institution.

Zeller, who had held the title of Hofrat since 1961 , made great contributions to the development of agricultural chemistry in Austria. His main research interests included studies on fat formation and fat storage in plants. He has received several awards for his scientific life's work, including the Great Decoration of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria . The Association of German Agricultural Inspection and Research Institutes awarded him the Sprengel-Liebig Gold Medal .
