Norbert Gottschalk (born August 7, 1954 in Essen ) is a German jazz musician ( vocals , guitar , trumpet , flugelhorn ), composer and music teacher. According to Jürgen Wölfer , he is one of the best German jazz singers.

Live and act

Gottschalk first studied guitar and trumpet at the comprehensive university in Essen and singing at the Cologne University of Music . As a result of a scholarship, he continued his education at the Hamburg University of Music as part of the popular music model experiment. In 1984 he and his own trio were awarded prizes by the International Jazz Federation at the Leverkusener Jazz Days . This was followed by a study visit to the Berklee College of Music in Boston . He presented his debut album Light-Weight-Sight as a jazz vocalist in 1988 ; it was awarded the quarterly prize of the German record critics . Further productions followed, including the solo album Jazzvocals - Guitars - Horns and four albums in a duo with guitarist Frank Haunschild . He worked u. a. with Michael Mantler ( Many Have No Speech , 1987), Peter Herbolzheimer and the Freiburg Jazz Choir, he is also a member of Jazzpool NRW and worked with Thomas Freitag and Richard Rogler . He is considered a virtuoso scat singer and was also active as a songwriter and composer. a. for Frank Nimsgern / Chaka Khan . He also composed for the SDR and the Big Band of Erwin Lehn .

Since 1993 Gottschalk has taught at the State Conservatorium Maastricht ; He was also a lecturer at the Cologne University of Music and visiting professor in Lucerne for ten years . Since 2001 he has been teaching jazz singing and vocal improvisation at the International Music College Freiburg .
