Gunnar Plumber

Gunnar Plümer (* 2. May 1951 in Bremen ) is a German double bass player of the modern jazz .

biography

Plumber studied with Paul Breuer at the Cologne University of Music between 1977 and 1979 . In 1980 and 1981 he played in the band of the American guitarist John Thomas . Then he played with Christof Lauer and Benny Bailey . For more than a decade he formed a trio with Wolfgang Engstfeld and Peter Weiss , which was complemented by Randy Brecker to form a quartet ("Mr. Max", 1989; "Together", 1991). He recorded his Barlach cycle with Mikesch van Grümmer . He was also a member of the Uli Beckerhoff Group, in Michael Sagmeister's trioand in the quartet of Lee Konitz and Frank Wunsch . At the JazzFest Berlin he performed in a duo with Matthias Nadolny in 1996 ; then he formed a trio with Otto Wolters and Michael Küttner . He also played at recordings and concerts with Thomas Hufschmidt , Barre Phillips , Terumasa Hino and Albert Mangelsdorff . Bobo Stenson , Rainer Brüninghaus , Gary Thomas , Norma Winstone or John Abercrombie . He toured several times with Kenny Wheeler and Lee Konitz, plays in the quintet Songs and Rhythms and performs regularly with the Skoda Workshop Band .

Plumber taught at the Folkwang University in Essen and for many years to this day at the music school of the city of Bonn. There he is responsible for the school's jazz department. He is a lecturer at international jazz workshops in Germany, Holland, Belgium and Italy. As early as 1988, Gunnar Plümer was recognized by the Stuttgarter Zeitung as “currently the best German jazz bassist”.
