Peter Weiss (born April 13, 1949 in Delve ) is a German modern jazz drummer .

Live and act

At the age of sixteen, in addition to his apprenticeship as typesetter, Weiss began playing drums and initially took private lessons. He first played in rhythm & blues bands. He studied at the Robert Schumann Conservatory in Düsseldorf and attended the jazz courses in Remscheid in 1969/70 , where he met Michel Herr and Uli Beckerhoff . In 1971 he played in the quartet of Wolfgang Engstfeld , then in the trios of Michel Pilz and Ed Kröger . He then belonged to the “Changes” group with Beckerhoff and Engstfeld. With the Trio von Engstfeld (with Gunnar Plümer ) he played at numerous festivals and the albums "Direct to Disc" (1981) and "Drivin '" (1983); later the still existing trio with Randy Brecker expanded to a quartet ("Mr. Max", 1989; "ToGether", 1991). Weiss founded his own quartet in 1984; since 1988 he has been co-leader of a quartet with Engstfeld. In 1989 he founded the still existing all-star line-up “Jazzpool NRW”. In addition, he plays with the "Swing Factory" and with "Big4Swing". He is also a member of the Jazz Ensemble Düsseldorf . He has also worked with John Scofield , Christoph Spendel , Matthias Nadolny , Christof Lauer , Sigi Busch , Andy Lumpp , Frank Wunsch , Glen Moore , Florian Poser and Charlie Mariano .

In 1981 Weiss and the Trio von Engstfeld received the “Music Prize” from the city of Düsseldorf . From 1990 to 1995 he was a member of the Music Advisory Board and the Düsseldorf Prize Jury and is a member of the North Rhine-Westphalian jury of “ Jugend jazzt ”. Since 1979 he has organized the concert series “Jazz im Hofgarten Düsseldorf”; he is also responsible for the artistic direction of the jazz forge .
