Christoph Möckel (* 1986 in Schwerin ) is a German jazz musician ( saxophones , clarinets ).

Life

Möckel, who comes from a family of musicians (his father is the drama conductor Thomas Möckel), attended a music high school . There he was active in the choir and in the big band. Between 2006 and 2011 he studied saxophone at the Cologne University of Music and Dance with Wolfgang Engstfeld , Claudius Valk and Frank Gratkowski . He also attended workshops with Hayden Chisholm , Mark Turner and Steve Coleman .

Möckel played in the European Jazz Orchestra 2012, the Cologne Contemporary Jazz Orchestra , the Maxime Bender Orchestra ( Fellowship ) and the Florian Ross Big Company ( Ties and Loose Ends ). His debut album Dreamlike with his own quartet was recorded in February 2013 in cooperation with Deutschlandfunk . As a member of the Offshore Quintet , he recorded three albums. With Lucas Leidinger , Stefan Berger and Max Andrzejewski he forms the formation level zero . He was also a member of Marko Mlynek's Bellbird , the quartet of Oliver Lutz ( Signal ) and Sebastian Sternal's Symphonic Society . He also worked as a musician in various productions at the Schauspiel Köln , Staatstheater Schwerin and Schauspiel Düsseldorf . He has lived in Berlin since 2019.

Prizes and awards

Möckel was a prizewinner in the national competition “ Jugend jazzt ” and “ Jugend musiziert ”. In 2010 and 2011 he won the Convento Jazz Prize North Rhine-Westphalia; he was a finalist at the European Jazz Prize Burghausen 2009/2011 and at the competition at the Leverkusener Jazztage 2008.
