Claudius Valk (born October 20, 1966 in Ratingen ) is a German jazz saxophonist, clarinetist and flutist.

Live and act

Valk studied classical and jazz saxophone at the Cologne University of Music with Hugo Read and Wolfgang Engstfeld and jazz music at the Folkwang University in Essen with Matthias Nadolny . In 1994 he received the Folkwang Prize for Music.

From 1994 to 1999 he was a member of the Belgian saxophone quartet Blindmann . Since 1995 he has also directed the Valktrio (with bassist Werner Lauscher and drummer Marc Lehan ), whose first album was released in 1996. From 1996 to 1997 he stayed in New York , where he took lessons from Richie Beirach and Dave Liebman . a. performed with Chuck Clark , Ron Vincent and Loren Stillman . During a Cuban tour in 1997 he worked a. a. with Ramón Valle and Felipe Cabrera .

With Norbert Scholly and Daniel Schröteler , Valk forms the trio Low Cut Experience (LCE), with Ralph Beerkircher the duo emergenzen in 2005 . As a sideman he worked a. a. with Eric Vloeimans , Kenny Wheeler , Frank Gratkowski , Jasper van't Hof , Reiner Winterschladen , Claudio Puntin , Gerd Dudek and Contrast Trio . Valk has been teaching jazz saxophone at the Cologne University of Music since 2001; Since 2002 he has also been a lecturer for jazz saxophone at the Conservatory of Maastricht .

Prizes and awards

Claudius Valk won the New German Jazz Prize in 2014 as best soloist. He was also successful in the band rating together with Sebastian Sternal as Sternal & Valk .
