Werner Neumann (jazz musician)

Werner Neumann (born August 13, 1964 in Duisburg ) is a German jazz guitarist and music teacher.

Live and act

Neumann grew up in Gelnhausen and only learned to play the guitar as a teenager. He first studied musicology at the University of Cologne , then jazz guitar for a year at the Arnhem University of Music and finally jazz guitar at the Cologne University of Music . He took additional lessons from Pat Metheny , Attila Zoller , Mick Goodrick , Scott Henderson , Adam Rogers , Oz Noy , Mike Moreno and Alex Goodman .

He taught at the Munich Guitar Institute from 1990 to 1995 , at the University of Mainz until 1997 and at the Cologne University of Music until 2006, and between 2003 and 2005 at the Berlin University of the Arts . In 2005 he was appointed professor at the University of Music and Theater in Leipzig, where he has lived since 2006.

As a sideman, Neumann u. a. with Richie Beirach , Keith Copeland , John Goldsby , Dave King , Simon Nabatov , Bill Ramsey , Ronny Verbiest , Jiggs Whigham , Napoleon Murphy Brock , Joo Kraus , Frank Möbus , Max Mutzke and Mel Collins .

He leads Group Three from the Rhine (with Helmuth Fass , Alex Vesper and Pit Hupperten); with Martin Auer , Dominique Ehlert and Matze Eichhorn he forms the group MEAN , with Alma Neumann and Eva Klesse the group No Kissing . Since 1988 he has also been a member of the Franck Band (with Hinrich Franck , Hardy Fischötter and Claus Fischer ) and the Neuberling Trio (with Pepe Berns and Heinrich Köbberling ). From 1988 to 2006 he was guitarist with Wolf Maahn . Since 2012 he has been working in the BabY BoOmer formation with Florian Kästner ( Fender Rhodes ), Robert Lucaciu (bass) and Philipp Scholz (drums). He recorded three albums with the Hannes Clauss Quartet (with Claudio Puntin ). Neumann also worked with larger ensembles such as the WDR Big Band or the MDR Symphony Orchestra under Kristjan Järvi .

He also worked as a guitarist and composer on films such as Der WiXXer , The Innocence of the Crows and A Fleeing Horse . As a band leader and sideman , he has recorded more than forty albums. In 2001 he published the guitar school The Jazz Method for Guitar - Solo ( Schott-Verlag ).

He is at times guitarist for the Heavytones .
