Hannes Clauss

Hannes Clauss (born July 3, 1949 in Würzburg ) is a German jazz drummer .

Live and act

From 1974 to 1980 Clauss completed an art degree at the Braunschweig University of Art , where he was Roland Dörfler's master class . During this time he was the drummer for the group "Summit" and the Joe Viera Sextet . He was a founding member of the band "Quartett & Brass" (1979–1998), with whom he gave concerts in European countries and recorded LP and CD productions. In 1996 he founded the "Hannes Clauss Quartet". This group published four CD productions and twice went on a tour of Africa with the Goethe-Institut . He is also the founder of the free jazz quartet "HCL Ensemble", which presented the CD production "HCL 13". In 2014 he founded the improvisation trio MACH together with Markus Markowski and Reinhart Hammerschmidt.

Clauss was also the drummer in the octet "Satiemental Journeys" by the French bassist Joëlle Léandre . He performed with the guitarist Herb Ellis , the trumpeter Woody Shaw , the saxophonist Chico Freeman and with Albert Mangelsdorff .

In terms of cultural policy, Clauss is involved in the Oldenburg Musician Initiative and the Association of Visual Artists. He was the initiator and artistic director of the Nord Jazz Festival Westerstede . In addition to his musical activities, Clauss is also active as a visual artist.

Awards

Both "Quartett & Brass" and the "Hannes Clauss Quartet" have won multiple awards from the Lower Saxony Jazz Podium . In 2006 he was awarded the JazzIn Prize of the State of Lower Saxony as an outstanding artistic personality by the Lower Saxony Minister for Science and Culture .
