John Goldsby (born December 10, 1958 in Louisville / Kentucky , USA ) is an American jazz bassist, composer, teacher and author.

Live and act

John Goldsby grew up in Kentucky, USA. He discovered the bass as a teenager and had lessons with both classical and jazz bassists, among others. a. with Rufus Reid , Dave Holland and Jamey Aebersold . He earned his first spurs as a freelance jazz musician in Louisville, Kentucky before moving to New York City in 1980. As the house bass player at the Stanley J's jazz club, he has worked with u. a. Played Helen Humes, Jay McShann, Buddy DeFranco, Buddy Tate, Barney Kessel, Dave Liebman, Tom Harrell and Johnny Hartman.

In the New York jazz scene he was able to establish himself as a first call bassist and participated in concerts and recordings with numerous well-known musicians, including Benny Goodman , Lionel Hampton , Wynton Marsalis , John Lewis , Gunther Schuller , George Benson , Michael Brecker , Kenny Barron , Mel Lewis , Toshiko Akiyoshi , Hubert Laws , Claude Bolling , Scott Hamilton , Frank Vignola and also big bands like the American Jazz Orchestra and the Smithsonian Masterworks Jazz Orchestra . He can also be heard on many episodes of Jamey Aebersold ’s Play-Along series, which has served and still serves generations of future jazz musicians as training material.

In 1994 he was appointed to the WDR Big Band , Cologne, and has been a permanent member and solo bassist (acoustic and electric bass) ever since. In addition to his work in the WDR Big Band, he regularly plays in smaller ensembles. a. with John Marshall, Joachim Schoenecker, Frank Chastenier , Hubert Nuss , Lee Konitz , Bill Mays, Martin Sasse , Karolina Strassmayer , Drori Mondlak , Paul Heller and Bob Mintzer . He also has his own “Jazz & Talk” series at Steinway, Cologne, to which he regularly invites musicians.

As a teacher and lecturer, Goldsby has participated in numerous workshops around the world. He also held lectureships at William Paterson College (New Jersey, USA), the University of Music (Cologne) and the Folkwang University (Essen). Since 2016 he has been visiting professor for jazz double bass, ensemble direction and Masters coaching at the Maastricht Conservatory (Netherlands). He has authored three textbooks: Bowing Techniques for the Improvising Bassist (Jamey Aebersold Jazz, Inc., 1990), Bass Notes (Jamey Aebersold Jazz, Inc., 1992), and The Jazz Bass Book (Hal Leonard, Backbeat Books, 2002). As an instructional video he published "The Upright Bass Handbook". Goldsby writes for "Bass Player Magazine" (since 1990), "Bass Professor" (1997-2000), "Double Bassist Magazine" (2000-2008).

John Goldsby is married to the pianist and author Robin Meloy Goldsby and lives in Lohmar near Cologne. They have two grown children.
