Joo Kraus (born November 22, 1966 in Ulm ) is a German jazz trumpeter and composer .

Live and act

At the age of 19, Joo Kraus won the national youth music competition . From 1985 to 1988 he studied at the University of Music in Munich with Paul Lachenmeir.

Joo Kraus first appeared in 1986 with the band deWinkelHattler (“Humanimal Talk”, with Naná Vasconcelos among others ). In 1987 he joined the Krautrock band Kraan , with which he played until 1992.

In 1991, together with the Ulm bassist Hellmut Hattler, he founded the hip jazz duo Tab Two , which received five German Jazz Awards due to its sales, with which he achieved his international breakthrough. Equipped with a virtual band, the two toured many festivals in Europe, America and Asia in the 1990s. With their acid jazz they also influenced later hip-hop and drum and bass . Tab Two broke up after eight albums in 1999, but got back together in 2012 and presented their best-of album Two Thumbs Up .

In 2003 he released his first solo album Public Jazz Lounge (skip records) in collaboration with the SWR Big Band , which was nominated for a Grammy in the same year .

In 2006 the second album Basic Jazz Lounge - The Ride followed . For this he brought Ralf Schmid on board as arranger and co-producer. He also played all keys of the Clavinet, Moog and electric piano. Astrid North (Cultured Pearls, Soulounge), Johannes Enders and Peter Fessler were immortalized here as a vocal guest . The way from the BigBand to his own tour band was the external change. The concept has stayed the same: original compositions meet extraordinary interpretations of songs from a wide variety of genres.

Most of his album Sueno was recorded in November 2007 in the venerable Egrem studio in Havana , Cuba . Joo Kraus and his arranger and pianist Ralf Schmid met seven Cuban musicians here, such as u. a. Luis Frank . In Germany, the voice of the German-Finn Kristiina Tuomi was added. In October 2008 "Sueno" was published by edel records . Since then, Joo Kraus has been touring all of Europe with the project.

His penultimate album Songs from Neverland , which he developed and produced together with the Tales in Tones Trio, hit stores in October 2010. It is a musical homage to Michael Jackson . "Sometimes with a second-line touch à la New Orleans, sometimes reminiscent of Miles Davis of the early 1960s (The Way You Make Me Feel), Michael Jackson's pop is getting a new face," writes Ulf Drechsel from rbb-kulturradio < .

He also worked in a LiedProject duo, together with Peter Fessler , performing live with Mezzoforte in 2010 . In 2016 his Duo Shane (with Ralf Schmid ) was awarded the Biberacher Jazz Prize.
