Hellmut Hattler (born April 12, 1952 in Ulm ) is a German jazz and rock bassist.

Life

Kraan

At the age of 16, Hattler played the double bass in a school band, with Jan Wolbrandt on drums and Johannes Pappert on saxophone , among others . When Peter Wolbrandt joined, he switched to the electric bass . In 1971 this quartet became the jazz rock group Kraan . When asked about the meaning of the name of the band, its inventor Hattler explains: "It sounds good because it starts hard, aggressively, and ends softly at the end." This duality, viewed in the musical context, became the trademark of Hattler and his various projects . On the one hand, his music appealed to a groove-oriented audience ; on the other, others considered him to be the German bassist par excellence. After six albums and hundreds of concerts with Kraan, Hellmut Hattler released his first solo album Bassball , supported by a German all-star cast .

1975–1981 and 2008 he also played under the pseudonym Karl Maria von Sinnen with Guru Guru .

During the years of its existence, the Kraan group lived together for financial reasons, among other things. Although the first liquidation plans arose after seven years, they created Flyday in 1978, according to their critics, one of the most outstanding records of their career. Three more albums followed until the band was finally disbanded in 1983.

At the end of the 1980s they became active again for a few years, the trumpeter Joo Kraus took over the part of the keyboardist Ingo Bischof. In summer 2000 there was an acclaimed comeback in Ulm and then at the Burg Herzberg Festival (cast: Peter Wolbrandt, Jan Fride Wolbrandt, Hellmut Hattler and Ingo Bischof). In 2001 Hattler celebrated his 30th stage anniversary with Kraan and released a new CD Live in 2001 . Since then the band has released new productions and can be heard live again.

Tab Two

After a short guest appearance with the Fehlfarben group , Hattler met the Ulm trumpeter Joo Kraus in 1986. Together with the guitarist Torsten de Winkel , who can be heard as a guest on all Tab-Two albums in the following years , the CD de Winkel-Hattler - Humanimal Talk was created . After de Winkel's move to the United States, Hattler and Kraus produced their first duo record, Mind Movie, as Tab Two in 1991 . From the initial attempts to combine jazz and hip-hop , they became the pioneering German acid jazz formation, which had great success with their seven albums. Flagman Ahead became a long-running American radio station; the duo composed for Tina Turner . Nevertheless, after many global tours , Tab Two ended the collaboration and broke up.

Since 2011, the two musicians have been working together on the best-of album Two Thumbs Up , which was released in April 2012. After a first appearance at a festival for Hattler's birthday in 2012, they played twelve concerts. In 2013 there were two appearances as Tab Two & Friends, with the former guest singer Sandie Wollasch and Oli Rubow on drums and Ralf Schmid on keyboards.

Hattler

With the inspiration of young musicians who consciously incorporate electronics into their playing style , Hattler set up his latest project Hattler in 2000 , which set new impulses with the album No Eats Yes . Long-term partners such as Torsten de Winkel and Joo Kraus were also involved in the recordings. No Eats Yes was awarded the German Echo Record Prize in 2001 for the best jazz production of the year.

Also with the Deep-Dive-Corp. he presented himself more electronically and recorded five albums from 2000 to 2006, followed by a best of album.

Since 2006 Hattler can be heard in a younger line-up with Fola Dada , Torsten de Winkel and Oli Rubow on the CD The Big Flow and on tour.

In 2001 Hattler founded the record label Bassball Recordings .

Hellmut Hattler has published two bass books so far, on the one hand the Hip Bass School , which is mainly concerned with the pick technique developed by Hattler himself, and on the other hand the Hellmut Hattler Songbook , which presents songs from his Hattler project in tabs and notes. In addition, he teaches regularly at the "Bass Camp" of the German bass guitar manufacturer Warwick  - an annual training week where participants from all over the world have the opportunity to take instrument courses with internationally known bass players.
