Ralf Schmid (* 1969 ) is a German pianist , composer, arranger and music producer .

Life

Ralf Schmid grew up in Konstanz and took classical piano lessons. During his school days he played in bands jazz , rock and funk . From 1990 he studied school music at the Stuttgart University of Music and Performing Arts and from 1996 film music at the Ludwigsburg Film Academy . In 1998 he and his family moved to New York to study jazz piano and composition as a DAAD scholarship holder . In 1999 he was accepted as a composition student at the Henry Mancini Institute in Los Angeles . Important teachers and mentors during his student days were Bernd Rabe , Horst Jankowski , Richie Beirach and Robert Sadin .

Ralf Schmid founded the Tales in Tones Trio in 1995 (formerly Schmid / Hübner / krill , with Veit Hübner , bass, and Torsten Krill , drums). The trio won the Hennessy Jazz Search in the Cologne Philharmonic in 1998 and released four CDs, two of them with trumpeter Joo Kraus .

Ralf Schmid founded the label ObliqSound in New York with the music producer and guitarist Michele Locatelli , for which he produced numerous recordings. After returning from the USA, he established a second headquarters for the label in Munich .

Ralf Schmid also worked as an arranger and conductor with professional big bands ; He has conducted concerts, studio recordings, radio and TV broadcasts with the NDR Big Band , the SWR Big Band , the hr Big Band , the RIAS Big Band Berlin and the Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra Los Angeles.

He has produced several albums with Joo Kraus since 2002: Public Jazz Lounge (2002), The Ride (2006), Sueño (2008), created in the Egrem studio in Havana (Cuba), Songs from Neverland (2010), Painting Pop (2011) , Public Jazz Society (2016) and Joo Jazz (2016). The album 'Public Jazz Lounge' received a GERMAN JAZZ AWARD GOLD in 2015 for 10,000 records sold in Germany, with 'Painting Pop' Joo Kraus won an ECHO Jazz.

In 2009 Schmid produced and arranged the album bossarenova with Paula Morelenbaum and the SWR Big Band for the 50th anniversary of Bossa Nova , which was nominated for the Brazilian Music Award . He has presented the project since 2011 with Paula Morelenbaum and Joo Kraus under the name 'bossarenova trio' in concerts, a. a. in New York, San Francisco, Singapore and numerous European metropolises.

In March 2013 the album cornucopía was released with Ivan Lins and the SWR Big Band, also produced and arranged by Ralf Schmid, which was recorded in Stuttgart , New York , Rio de Janeiro and Johannesburg . Schmid managed another project with Ivan Lins in Copenhagen in 2017, u. a. with the Danish Radio Big Band and the New York Voices .

In October 2014 Ralf Schmid's music theater was “A Distant Drum” a. a with Daniel Hope , Jason Marsalis premiered at Carnegie Hall New York.

In 2015 Schmid began working on his futuristic piano-electro project PYANOOK, which he recorded as an audiovisual production in the KUBUS studio of the ZKM Karlsruhe in 2016 and in which he a. a. Used data gloves for real-time sound control of the piano sounds. PYANOOK has been performed live since September 2017, including a. at festivals in Freiburg, Rio de Janeiro and Berlin.

Ralf Schmid has been a professor at the Freiburg University of Music since 2002 .
